Choosing Between Redirect Types

When you create a GoshLinks short link, you choose a redirect type. GoshLinks supports 301 , 302 , and 307 redirects.

When you create a GoshLinks short link, you choose a redirect type. GoshLinks supports 301, 302, and 307 redirects.

The redirect type controls how browsers and search engines should treat the short link when it sends visitors to the Target URL.

301 Redirect

A 301 redirect means the destination is permanent.

Use a 301 redirect when you are confident the short link should keep pointing to the same final destination for the long term.

Good Uses for 301

  • A permanent resource page.
  • A long-term brand page.
  • A destination that is not expected to change.
  • A short link where caching the destination is acceptable.

302 Redirect

A 302 redirect means the destination is temporary.

GoshLinks recommends 302 for most short links because campaign links, affiliate links, promotional links, and sales pages often change over time.

Good Uses for 302

  • Campaign links.
  • Limited-time offers.
  • Affiliate links.
  • Links you may update later.
  • Testing different destinations.
  • QR codes where the destination may change after printing.

307 Redirect

A 307 redirect is also temporary, but it tells the browser or app to keep the original browser action.

Most everyday short links do not need 307. It is mainly useful for technical links where a form, app, or API-style link must keep behaving exactly the same after the redirect.

Good Uses for 307

  • Technical links used by apps or forms.
  • Situations where the original browser action must not change.
  • Temporary destinations where you need stricter browser behaviour than a normal 302.

QR Codes and Redirect Types

GoshLinks QR codes point to the short link, not directly to the Target URL.

That means the QR code itself stays the same if you change the Target URL later. The redirect type controls how the short link sends the visitor on after the QR code has been scanned.

For most QR code use cases, 302 is the safer choice because printed QR codes are often used for campaigns, menus, PDFs, handouts, signs, or offers that may need to change later.

Use 307 only for technical QR code workflows where the original browser action must be preserved after the redirect.

Default Redirect Type

You can choose the default redirect type in GoshLinks > Settings > Setup. This controls which redirect type is selected automatically when you create a new link.

Changing the Redirect Type

You can change the redirect type when editing a link. Pro users can also use Bulk Editing to change several selected links to 301, 302, or 307 at once.

Recommendation

If you are unsure, use 302. It is the safer default for most short-link workflows, especially when the link may be edited, reused, or printed as a QR code.
