Choosing Between 301 and 302 Redirects

Understand the difference between permanent and temporary redirects, and when to use each one.

Choosing Between 301 and 302 Redirects

When you create a GoshLinks short link, you choose a redirect type. GoshLinks supports 301 and 302 redirects.

301 Redirect

A 301 redirect means the destination is permanent.

Use a 301 redirect when you are confident the short link should always point to the same final destination.

Good Uses for 301

  • A permanent resource page.
  • A long-term brand page.
  • A destination that is not expected to change.

302 Redirect

A 302 redirect means the destination is temporary.

GoshLinks recommends 302 for most short links because campaign links, affiliate links, promotional links, and sales pages often change over time.

Good Uses for 302

  • Campaign links.
  • Limited-time offers.
  • Affiliate links.
  • Links you may update later.
  • Testing different destinations.

Default Redirect Type

You can choose the default redirect type in GoshLinks > Settings > Setup. This controls which redirect type is selected automatically when you create a new link.

Changing the Redirect Type

You can change the redirect type when editing a link. Pro users can also use Bulk Editing to change several selected links to 301 or 302 at once.

Recommendation

If you are unsure, use 302. It is the safer default for most short-link workflows.
